Analysis of contact force distribution in a moving granule bed subjected to shear deformation by a set of rollers

Large contact forces on granules could give rise to undesirable attrition. In a new device, referred as the Particle Shear and Impact tester, are subjected repeated sequential impact shearing, latter effected by two counter-rotating rollers with differential angular speeds an adjustable gap between rollers. This enables force distribution be varied in order apply representative forces, experienced manufacturing plants. Granule flow is simulated Distinct Element Method for several roller sizes. The resulting compared that from shear cell simulations plant normal stresses (8 15 kPa), calibrate appropriate size. 90th percentile of distributions matched set A size approximately 3.5 times particle (based number distribution) gives good match interparticle cell. replicating experience plants, whether during handling transport, or more severe stressing conditions, e.g. compaction even grinding, thereby assessing attrition fragmentation propensity granules.
